I was quite excited about the Rat scene but since it will make the rest of the background weak I will stick to the murals as you said..Andriana Laskarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16867892968303573612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5134407305757526016.post-75923689128859968362010-11-09T21:06:46.389+00:002010-11-09T21:06:46.389+00:00The power of strong coloured light for heightened ...The power of strong coloured light for heightened expressionistic effect revealed!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBlE9R81fpktutorphilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11842833126210822641noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5134407305757526016.post-42900178046184302402010-11-09T21:04:46.875+00:002010-11-09T21:04:46.875+00:00I'm looking forward to seeing you get a bit br...I'm looking forward to seeing you get a bit braver with mixing your traditional mark-making with your digital skills; even I'm not sure 'what' it will give you in terms of aesthetic or effect, but there's only one way to find out, right? Put simply, if you scan in some of those ink drawings, you could at least use Photoshop to sample the colours from the scan by which to create a unique colour palette.

Okay - your essay - good choice, because it will be rich in symbolism, no doubt - but please be aware of relying to heavily on one source (the dvd extras) - diversify, read around, read lots - write interestingly!

Here is a list of links back to the CGAA Group Blog, where I have recently uploaded loads of information regarding the way I want students to tackle their written assignments. As you now prepare your unit 2 assignments on production design, pay close attention to the advice given. I will be looking for clear improvement in terms of use of language, academic ‘voice’, use of conventions, argument structure and correct methods of referencing.

Academic style/Do’s & Don’ts

http://ucarochester-cgartsandanimation.blogspot.com/2010/11/cgaa-yr-1-written-assignment-stuff-or.html

1st Person to 3rd person conversions

http://ucarochester-cgartsandanimation.blogspot.com/2010/11/fao-1st2nd3rd-cgaa-students-from-1st-to.html

Use of footnotes

http://ucarochester-cgartsandanimation.blogspot.com/2010/11/fao-1st2nd3rd-cgaa-students-use-of.html

How to satisfy essay criteria/assignment presentation/hyperlink to referencing methods

http://ucarochester-cgartsandanimation.blogspot.com/2010/11/fao-cgaa-yr-1unit-2spacewritten.html

Also – be sure to check out the 2 student essays uploaded to myUCA/Space/Unit Materials – good examples of degree level written assignments. Hey Andriana,
You...Interim Online Review 09/11/10

Hey Andriana,

You've been patient - thank you! - and this IOR post is great - super convenient for me, and I hope, clarifying for you. It can be good to 'see' your progress, right?

Okay - in no particular order: yes, your reviews are growing in confidence and sophistication each time. I now want students to approach their reviews as they would their written assignments - Harvard Method included - I want you cg people to be sooooo at ease with academic writing that essays stop being the thing they avoid (and then f**k up!).

Rats! No - sorry, but I get a sense that the space will suffer if you make them its/your focus; use them to add life/scale/focus to your space, but don't let them steal the show. I'd rather you spent your creative energies with the murals and the pit etc. Don't be afraid of using some artistic license with the pit and the pendulum - it can be very 'up/down' in terms of structure and composition, so use your expressionistic powers and forced perspective to give it an edge. Think theatrically too - in theatre, they use bold coloured spotlights to add emotional intensity. You're creating concept art for an ANIMATION remember, so why not consider using a more stylised approach to colour? Imagine a blood red spotlight pouring down the pendulum shaft, casting deep black shadows and rim-lighting the skeletons of the dead and dying... you get the picture. It does seem as if you're slightly changing styles between the very pronounced expressionism of the house, to something more 'realistic' in the pit - BUT, I'd suggest your style should remain constant; isn't it true that your 'visual concept' for turning Poe's heightened, super-anxious prose into physical spaces is to use expressionistic devices? If so, you'd better stick to it.tutorphilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11842833126210822641noreply@blogger.com
