Hello Phil,
It's been an exciting first two weeks of this project and I think I now know what it takes to make a hand drawn animation: WORK! Although I can feel the toll of the previous projects and I am not as motivated as I used to be I think I will manage to produce a good animation on time (I hope!). Since I know you are happy with my story(here) (with an ending which am not quite sure about, but I think I will have time to work it out till then) here is the rest of my work:

Oh! Quick question. Since my animation is based on the 1950's I was thinking of using collage for the background since the frame is not going to change much? I like the idea of a kitchen made out of cut outs of the '50's bright coloured kitchens. I am not sure if I am allowed to do that and not if it's going to work out with the hand drawn characters. It's just an idea...
And here is my Essay Idea: Nick Park. He was the animator that came in mind after Walt Disney but I think I am going to stick to him since there is a lot to talk about in stop motion animation.
Here is a list of Books I found in the library(There were not that many left since most were on loan.)
Creating 3D Animation |
Stop Motion: Craft Skills for Model Animation |
Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit |
Art and Animation |
In Short: A Guide to Short Film-making in Digital Image. |
Creating Creature Comforts |
And here is my Essay Structure:
(After doing further research I've realised Nick Park was NOT the founder of Aardman studios. I will correct that eventually.

ReplyDeleteHey Andriana! At last! Since you changed your blog address (to avoid any further blushes) you're now at the bottom of my bookmark list... anyway, as we've discussed in the corridor, you just need to ensure that your story is a vehicle for demonstrating your understanding of the principles of animation, so use your fridge in its entirety - use all of its body. The tongue I like - it reminds me of a chameleon's tongue - but don't let it do all the work for you. I know you're still undecided about the ending, but I've got to say it again; for my money, your story ends on the final shot of your unlucky boyf' covering his privates with a cake! Trust me on this!!!
I think the idea of using a coloured background is a risk - because anything that moves you and the emphasis away from the 'visibility' of the animation technique itself would be a misstep. I have no doubt that there might be a creative situation in which your use of background would be the perfect thing - is this it, however? I suggest you discuss the matter further with Meg on Friday.
Re. the essay - remember the guidance - AVOID GENERALISATIONS and ALWAYS BE SPECIFIC. So, a statement like 'A lot of artists use this technique and 'the people' like it' is just too flabby and content-lite. In terms of the history of stop-motion itself, obviously you know 'the Mascot' guy and you will also need to research Willis O'Brien - he was the guy who animated 'King King' - a film you've also seen. You'll need to build your context from there. You'll also need to refer to Ray Harryhausen too.
